Pop Wagner and Dakota Dave Hull
Saturday, October 24, 2009 ~ 7:30 pm
350 Main Street, Lyons Community Church, Lyons, CO
$10 in advance, $12 at the door
Dakota Dave Hull is a guitar player whose style spans a wide musical geography to create an infectious, uniquely personal blend of jazz, ragtime, folk, blues, western swing, and vintage pop. Hailed by Dave Van Ronk as "One of the best guitarists in the world", Dakota Dave is a gifted composer as well as a strikingly original interpreter of older tunes, and most of all, his music is fun!
Pop Wagner has quite the reputation as a singer, picker, fiddler, lasso twirler, poet and downright funny guy. He appeared quite frequently on A Prairie Home Companion during the show's formative years and for the last four decades he has worked his cowboy magic throughout forty-four states and ten countries. His cowboy anthems crackle with the warmth of a prairie campfire and his old time fiddle tunes set toes a-tappin' while he serves up spellbinding rope tricks and tall stories -- all with a good dose of friendly humor.
Pop and Dave together are a pair of musicians who are friends with each other, as well as friends with their music. They know each other's strengths and support and respect each other's musical gifts. Along with that respect comes an ease and playfulness that allows expression of emotions that are often hidden, but speak to just about everyone. A show not to be missed!

Witty and Gritty Tunes and Tales
Friday, February 20, 2009 ~ 7:30 pm

Michael Hurwitz is a Wyoming singer and songwriter with a style that falls somewhere between the delta blues and western cowboy swing; a musical gumbo he calls "Prairie Blues". Mike has rambled the country playing his music for over three decades, in the spotlight and in the moonlight, written a saddlebag full of great songs, and released several critically acclaimed albums of country blues and cowboy music. Sing Out Magazine praises Mike's "seemingly effortless delivery that goes down like a smooth, perfectly aged shot of fine scotch whiskey ". John Conquest of 3rd Coast Music says "Hurwitz's Prairie Blues comes across as natural as breathing". Mike's performances are a compelling mix of stories and humor from a life well spent, combined with outstanding musicianship and song-writing, and a big warm husky baritone. He'll be accompanied by his long-time touring and recording band, the Aimless Drifters ~ Tom Broderick on pedal steel guitar and Jerry Linn on bass ~ who are anything but aimless or drifting!
Gary McMahan is a nationally-recognized cowboy poet, singer, songwriter, national-champion yodeler, and humorist. He scatters funny songs, poems, barn-burning yodels, and hilarious stories throughout his performances. Offering tons of variety, his shows are down-home, clean, fast-paced, "awesomely entertaining," and "gut-bustingly funny!" The key to Gary's success is his cowboy heart coupled with his award-winning musical talents and on-stage charisma; he leaves the entire audience uplifted and laughing. And, his show is guaranteed to be clean and wholesome -- Gary is as careful as a naked man crossing a barbed-wire fence!

with
Swing State
Friday, January 30, 2009 ~ 7:30 pm
350 Main Street, Lyons Community Church, Lyons, CO
$12 in advance, $15 at the door
Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore are in synch and you know it! It's a partnership that's fun to watch and delicious to hear. Mollie is simply one of the finest singers and interpreters of American music alive today. She has performed and recorded with a virtual "who's who" of modern acoustic music, including her brother Tim O'Brien and Garrison Keillor of A Prairie Home Companion, and has a vast national and international following as a solo artist as well. Rich Moore is a virtuosic guitar player with "piles of styles". The intimacy of one voice and one guitar showcases their excellent musicianship, great material, and warm humor. The Washington Post says “The precision of [Mollie’s] phrasing, the smooth flow of her delivery and the sheer beauty of her alto make her one of the best interpretive singers in American pop today.”
Swing State is a dynamic quartet that serves up vintage and original swing, Dixieland, and old-time country music, with Greg Schochet on archtop guitar and mandolin, Bill Pontarelli on clarinet, Nancy Thorwardson singing lead vocals and socking out the rhythm on guitar and ukulele, and Aaron Keim rocking the bottom end on bass. This band soars, with Bill and Greg weaving intricate and inspired melodies, while Aaron and Nancy create a landslide of swing rhythm. This is a happy collusion—a swinging synergy that makes everybody want to hoot, holler, and shake that thing!
Jon Chandler and the Wichitones
with
Coyote Moon
Friday, Nov 7, 2008 ~ 7:30 pm
350 Main Street, Lyons Community Church, Lyons, CO
$12 in advance, $15 at the door
Jon Chandler is widely regarded as one of Americana Music’s premier singer-songwriters and one of the country’s best western authors. A seventh generation Coloradan, Jon’s western novels, songs and poems serve to keep the frontier ethic passed down from his ancestors alive. The Los Angeles Daily News notes, “Chandler’s lovingly crafted songs cover a wide territory of moods and subgenres.” The Cowboy Hall of Fame’s Persimmon Hill raves that he brings “…a new and significant interpretation of the West through music today.” Amazon.Com says, “Chandler’s wonderful rich tone adds to the haunting beauty of his meticulously written songs.” Supported by The Wichitones (Butch Hause and Johnny Neill), Waddie Mitchell says Jon presents "exactly what Western Music needs. So different and so good."
Coyote Moon is Emilyn Inglis and Joe Kuckla. While both Emilyn and Coyote Joe studied classical music at school, their true passion lies in performing Americana music, in the form of traditional folk and country, and Rocky Mountain inspired originals. Emilyn’s gentle fingerpicking and mesmerizing soprano clearly complement the high energy of Coyote Joe’s soulful and energetic guitar and vocals. Both performers in their own right, they clearly enjoy the synergy of performing as a duo.
